Beavers 'not playing very good baseball' -- yet, Casey says

CORVALLIS — Pat Casey was impressed with Ben Wetzler's season unveiling Sunday at Goss Stadium.

Casey was less impressed with fourth-ranked Oregon State's performance during its home-opening weekend series with Wright State.

"We're not playing very good baseball," Casey said after OSU's 13-2 victory over the Raiders to finish 3-1 in the four-game set. "We have a lot of things to work on. We're not anywhere where we need to be."

Oregon State's pitching was mostly excellent, holding Wright State (3-8) to 25 hits and eight earned runs in the four games.

The Beavers' fielding, hitting and baserunning had moments that drew the veteran skipper's ire, however, especially in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Raiders.

Casey is starting three freshmen position players -- Trever Morrison at shortstop, catcher Logan Ice and walk-on Caleb Hamilton at third base.

"Part of it is, we have people who have never played the game before" at the college level, Casey said. "The game is going to be the teacher for a while."

Oregon State (9-3) had only five hits in the Saturday loss and eight on Sunday. The Beavers won the latter with classic "small ball" as Wright State pitchers yielded 13 walks, three hit-by-pitch and three sacrifice flies in a game that was tied 1-1 after four innings.

Not all is bad with the Beaver bats. Senior infielder Kavin Keyes (.419) is off to a good start, All-American left-fielder Michael Conforto is hitting .325 with 17 RBIs in 12 games and the speedy Morrison is batting .304 with 16 runs scored.

Casey is unhappy with the high left-on-base numbers, though -- 35 in the last three games.

"If we're going to play in the Pac-12," Casey said, "we're going to have to get better."
