July 15, 1955: Richard Washington (age 59) ... a 6-11 star at state champion Benson High and at UCLA who went on to play six seasons in the NBA, competing for four teams and averaging 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He was a first-round draft pick of Kansas City in 1976 and the third pick overall, behind No. 1 John Lucas and No. 2 Scott May and before Adrian Dantley, Quinn Buckner and Robert Parish.

Trail Blazers owner Larry Weinberg says the team is considering building an area and moving from Memorial Coliseum.

Guard Terry Porter from Wisconsin-Stevens Point heads the cast at rookie camp at Chiles Center in preparation for the Blazers’ annual rookie game, which is expected to draw 10,000 fans to the coliseum.

The Portland Breakers, who completed their United States Football League season three weeks ago, are looking for local investors after missing the July 1 player and salary payroll of $300,000. Owner Joe Canizaro says “the payroll thing embarrasses me.”

Zola Budd of South Africa admits she was at fault in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she collided with Mary Slaney in the 3,000 meters, causing Slaney to fall midway through the race.

At Portland Sports Arena, Playboy Buddy Rose defeats Billy Two Eagles in the Tuesday main event, a “hair match.” Eagles is forced to have his hair cut after the defeat.
