Golf: It’s the second day of the 54-hole Senior Oregon Open Invitational, a Pacific Northwest Section PGA event making its 12th consecutive appearance at Windhorse Resort & Casino in Pendleton. Recent past champions include Tim O’Neal of Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash. (2013), Jeff Coston (2007, 2009, 2011, 2012), Chuck Milne (2010), Rob Gibbons (2008) and Fred Haney (2006).

Sports birthday

July 30, 1976: Nigel Burton (age 38), the Portland State head football coach was born on this day in Sacramento, Calif. He served as an assistant coach at South Florida and Oregon State and was defensive coordinator with Nevada before coming to PSU as the successor to Jerry Glanville. Burton is entering his fifth season as Vikings boss with an 18-27 overall record, including 11-21 in Big Sky games. The Viks finished 6-6 a year ago.

Point guard Damian Lillard of the Trail Blazers earns co-Most Valuable Player honors at the Las Vegas Summer League. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 draft averaged 26.5 points, 5.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds in four games. He shares MVP honors with second-year guard Josh Selby of the Memphis Grizzlies, who averaged a summer-league high 27.5 points per game. With Lillard scoring at least 23 points in each outing, Portland goes 4-1.

Beaverton fencer Mariel Zagunis carries the U.S. flag in the opening ceremony at the London Olympics.

The expansion MLS Portland Timbers, under interim coach Gavin Wilkinson, remain the only team in the league without a road victory as they fall 5-0 at Dallas. The Timbers then take Aston Villa to penalty kicks before dropping an exhibition game at Jeld-Wen Field.
