Hoke gets call to coach Ducks defense; Mariota has 2016 Titans coach

From Nick Aliotti to Don Pellum to Brady Hoke.

Hoke, who was 31-20 as Michigan’s head coach from 2011-14, is the new Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator. The Wolverines fired him after the 2014 season, and he sat out in 2015, working some for SiriusXM satellite radio.

"We are extremely excited to welcome coach Hoke to the Oregon family," says UO coach Mark Helfrich, in a statement. "He's passionate, knowledgeable and tough and has an outstanding track record of success from a defensive standpoint."

The Ducks ranked last in the Pac-12 in scoring defense and total defense under Pellum in 2015, and blew a 31-point lead and lost to TCU in the Alamo Bowl.

Hoke also was head coach at Ball State (2003-08) and San Diego State (2009-10). He served as a Michigan assistant from 1995-2002, coaching the defensive line.

And he was an assistant coach at Oregon State from 1989-94 under Dave Kragthorpe and Jerry Pettibone, in charge of the defensive line, with one year coaching the inside linebackers.

He replaces Pellum, the successor to Aliotti who was demoted after the 2015 season with a return to coaching linebackers.

Marcus Mariota has a new, sort of, boss. The Tennessee Titans have selected Mike Mularkey as head coach — after watching him lead the team as interim coach during the final two months of the 2015 NFL regular season

The Titans interviewed three other candidates this week, but went with Mularkey, a 21-year NFL veteran who took over when the club let go of Ken Whisenhunt seven games into the 2015 season.

Mularkey joined the Titans in 2014 as tight ends coach and became assistant head coach going into 2015.

He was head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2004-05 and head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguarsin 2012. He also has had eight years as an NFL offensive coordinator, with Atlanta, Miami, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, helping five teams reach the playoffs as an OC.

The Titans were 1-6 under Whisenhunt in 2015 — quarterback Mariota's rookie year out of the University of Oregon — and then went 2-7 under Mularkey.
