Saskatoon, sub-.500 team on road trip, beats Hawks, 3-1

A Moda Center crowd of 10,390 watched the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, but the home team couldn't send the fans home happy.

Saskatoon scored 24 seconds into the game and never trailed, beating the Winterhawks 3-1 in Western Hockey League action.

Connor Gay scored the quick goal for Saskatoon (17-25-3-0), but Evan Weinger countered with a tying goal later in the first period for the Hawks (22-20-2-0).

But, Logan Christensen scored at the 4:38 mark of the second period to give the visitors the lead, and the Blades held on until Mason McCarty padded the lead with an empty-net goal.

The Hawks put 39 shots on goalie Brock Hamm, who made 38 saves. Saskatoon scored its three goals on 25 shots against Adin Hill.

Portland next plays its annual MLK Day game. The Daylight Classic matchup at 3 p.m. Monday at Memorial Coliseum pits the Hawks and the Vancouver Giants.
