The game started at 3 p.m. with the curtains drawn at the coliseum.

Dominic Turgeon scored on the power play in the first period and then Blake Heinrich made it 2-0.

After Taylor Crunk's goal drew Vancouver within 2-1 in the second period, Portland stretched it to 3-1 in the third on Ryan Hughes' goal. Matt Barberis made it close with a third-period goal for the Giants (17-24-3-2).

Adin Hill made 27 saves on 29 shots for the Hawks (23-20-2-0), who will play Seattle at 7 Friday night at the Moda Center.
