Hawks take down Eastern Conference leader, beat Lethbridge 4-2
The Portland Winterhawks had trouble beating Kelowna this year, losing all four games against the Rockets and the past seven to the defending Western Hockey League champs.
But, the Hawks took down the other team with the WHL's most points, Lethbridge, 4-2, at Lethbridge, Alberta on Friday.
Portland has won four of the past five games.
Rodrigo Abols scored 29 seconds into the game. Cory Millette tied it for Lethbridge in the second period, but Skyler McKenzie made a backhand pass to Alex Schoenborn, who beat Hurricanes goalie Stuart Skinner as Portland led 2-1.
Cody Glass made a great pass to Schoenborn, who scored his second goal halfway through the third period. Abols beat Skinner for a 4-1 lead.
Tyler Wong added a late power-play goal for Lethbridge.
Adin Hill made 46 saves. Skinner had 34.
The Hawks (30-25-3-0) play at Medicine Hat, 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the second game of their six-game road trip.
Lethbridge, the Eastern Conference top team, fell to 40-18-1-0.
