WPC eliminated Eastern Oregon in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball playoffs on Wednesday night, topping the Mountaineers 80-71 on Bart Valentine Court in Southeast Portland.

Warner Pacific led 38-24 at the half. EOU got to within 68-63 with 3:09 to play, but four Knights scored down the stretch to help the home team withstand the visitors’ threat.

Warner Pacific, ranked 16th in NAIA Division II, improved to 22-8 and moved into the semifinals. WPC will play a 7 p.m. Saturday game at No. 14 Southern Oregon. SOU (24-7) won 71-68 at home over Corban on Wednesday.

In other CCC tournament quarterfinal action, legendary Oregon Tech coach Danny Miles picked up his 1,040th career victory and averted retirement as the fifth-seeded Owls won 79-58 at College of Idaho, and regular-season conference champion Northwest Christian advanced with a 66-60 homecourt victory over eighth-seeded Northwest.
