Glass gets two goals as Portland pulls closer to Tri-City and Victoria in WHL Western Conference

Cody Glass had two goals as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 4-2 Friday night at Spokane, Washington.

The victory pulled the Hawks to within one point of both Victoria for the first wild-card playoff spot in the Western Hockey League Western Conference (seventh place overall) and Tri-City for third place in the U.S. Division.

Portland improved to 37-26-1-3 (78 points), with five games remaining in the regular season.

The Winterhawks, who had clinched no worse than the eighth and final playoff spot in their previous outing, took an early lead at Veterans Memorial Arena. Glass scored 4:38 into the game, with assists to his teammates on the top line, Skyler McKenzie and keegan Iverson.

The Chiefs got even at 4:44 of the middle period, and the game was 1-1 going into the final frame.

Caleb Jones's goal at 11:34 put Portland in front, and Glass scored his 31st of the season at 14:04 for a two-goal advantage.

Assists on Jones' score went to Alex Overhardt and Joachim Blichfeld.

Iverson and Henri Jokiharju got assists on the Glass goal.

A shorthanded goal at 16:33 got the Chiefs to within 3-2.

McKenzie found an empty net at 19:30. It was his 39th goal of the season.

Portland was 1 for 6 on the power play. Spokane was 0 for 2.

The Hawks led in shots on goal, 48-25.

Cole Kehler got his fifth consecutive victory in net for Portland.

Spokane is ninth in the conference at 26-31-7-3 (62 points).
