Another No. 1 for Oregon State baseball
Oregon State has taken over the No. 1 spot in the D1Baseball.com rankings.
The Beavers improved to 17-1 with a three-game sweep at Arizona State last weekend.
Last week's No. 1, Florida State, went 1-4, and fell to 13th.
OSU, which has won 12 in a row, leads new No. 2 Louisville (19-0), No. 3 Texas Tech (17-4), TCU (14-5) and LSU (17-5) in the top five.
Arizona (15-4) is ninth, and Stanford (11-5) is 12th.
It's not the first No. 1 ranking of the season for the Beavers. Collegiate Baseball put them in the top spot last week.
This week, Collegiate Baseball has OSU and Louisville tied for first, with TCU third, Texas Tech fourth and Missouri (19-1) fifth. Arizona is seventh, Stanford 20th, Oregon 28th and Washington 30th in the top 30.
In the USA Today coaches poll, Louisville is No. 1, with Oregon State second, Texas Tech third, LSU fourth, TCU fifth and Arizona sixth. Stanford is 13th.
Louisville received 19 of 31 first-place coaches votes to 12 for OSU.
Oregon State and Arizona have a three-game Pac-12 series this weekend at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Games are set for 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
Damian Lillard has been named NBA Western Conference player of the week.
The 6-3 guard led the league in scoring, with 35.3 points per game. He made all 36 of his free throws and added 4.0 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
Lillard scored a season-high 49 points Sunday in a win at Miami, where his nine 3-pointers tied the Portland record.
The Blazers were 3-1 last week, beating San Antonio and Atlanta, as well, all on the road.
Portland Timbers midfielder David Guzman has been named to the Costa Rica national team for World Cup qualifiers on Friday against Mexico and on March 28 against Honduras. He will miss the Timbers Saturday match at Columbus, rejoining Portland prior to its April 2 home match against New England.
Midfielder Darlington Nagbe will be with the United States national team and also will miss the match at Columbus.
Portland's Cole Kehler was chosen the Western Hockey League Goaltender of the Week for the final week of the regular season. Kehler backstopped wins over Tri-City and Seattle, allowing only one goal in each game whiile stopping 66 of 68 shots.
Kehler has posted eight consecutive wins in goal. The Winterhawks open the playoffs with games on Friday and Saturday in Prince George.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
Concordia University senior thrower McKenzie Warren has been chosen as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's field athlete of the week.
The former Sandy High athlete broke GNAC records in the hammer and shot put, with bests at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open of 185 feet, 10 1/2 inches and 52 feet, 11 inches.
She also threw 155-3 3/4 in the discus, which ranks fifth in the conference.
TRACK AND FIELD
The 2017 Prefontaine Classic, May 26-27 at Hayward Field, will have four major gold medalists in the women's high jump, including 19-year-old World Indoor champion Vashti Cunningham of the U.S.
Others of note entered in the event: Spain's Ruth Beltia, who won the Olympic gold medal at age 37 last year in Rio de Janeiro; 33-year-old Chaunte Lowe, the 2017 U.S. outdoor champion and record-holder (6-8 3/4); and Poland's Kamila Licwinko, 30, who has been first and second in the past two World Indoor meets.
Also coming to Eugene are Mirela Demireva, 27, of Bulgaria, who captured the Olympic silver in Rio; Airine Palsyte, 24, of Lithuania, the gold-medal winner at the 2017 European indoor; Alessia Trost, 24, of Italy, a World Youth and World Junior champion who was fifth in Rio; and Levern Spencer, 32, from St. Lucia, who has competed in three Olympics and placed sixth last year.
Two Oregon teams are tied for second place after Monday's opening round of the PNW Pro-Assistant Championship at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue, Washington.
Leaders Mike Fosnick and Shane Prante from Lake Spanaway (Wash.) GC shot a 7-under-par 64.
Among four teams tied for second at 66 were Bryan Tunstill and Phil Kohnken of Columbia Edgewater Country Club and Brent Murray and Scott Erdmann of Oswego Lake Country Club.
The final round is Tuesday.
