Casey Martin's year
This was Casey Martin's year.
Not for his Oregon Ducks to win the NCAA men's golf championship — that happened in 2016.
But to be named Golfweek men's Division I coach of the year.
Martin's coaching job in 2017 was arguably at least as remarkable as it was the year before. The Eugene native rebuilt and/or reloaded the Ducks from a No. 28 fall national ranking to the NCAA tournament finals, where Oregon lost to Oklahoma.
The Ducks overcame the loss of 2016 NCAA individual champion Aaron Wise, who turned pro after that successful sophomore season.
Oregon won the Pac-12 championship, then battled into the NCAA tourney and upset Oklahoma State and No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt in match play at the national championships in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Martin, a former PGA Tour pro, also was voted Pac-12 coach of the year this season.
In 2016, it was the coach of the team Oregon beat for the NCAA crown that was named Golfweek Coach of the Year. The honor went to Texas' John Fields.
