In a battle of United Soccer League players on both sides, the Seattle Sounders eliminated the Portland Timbers from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Sounders got the winning goal on a second-half penalty kick and beat the Timbers 2-1 Tuesday night.
The fourth-round match was at Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila, Washington. Announced attendance: 3,937.
Seattle scored in the third minute, when Aaron Kovar finished a cross from left back Nouhou Tolo, beating Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.
Portland got even off a corner kick in the 38th minute, when Augustine Williams headed in the ball from right in front of the goal. Captain Ben Zemanski took the corner, and center back Rennico Clarke headed it from near the far post smartly to open striker Williams.
A hand ball set up Zach Mathers of the Sounders for a PK, which he made in the 54th minute as Attinella guessed wrong on which way to dive.
Seattle's next game in the tourney will be a Round of 16 affair, with matchups to be announced on Thursday.
