OREGON SPORTS HISTORY/Pat McMahon leads the way for coach Brian Tiler's Portland Timbers, and veteran Chuck Bown wins another race at Portland Speedway

July 4-5, 1977

The Portland Mavericks, who lead the Northwest League Southern Division at 11-7, ride Clif Holland's two home runs and four RBIs to a 9-4 victory at the Salem Senators.DUNN

John Dunn is the winning pitcher, tossing his third complete game in four starts.

"Designated Sweeper" Joe Garza is entitled to do his thing with a broom — he was fined $25 earlier by the league for his "sweeping" after the Mavs also won every game in a series.

• Chuck Bown, formerly of Portland, wins the 100-lap Western Grand National late-model stock car race on the Fourth of July at Portland Speedway. It's the 12th stop on a 22-race western series. Bown averages more than 69 mph on the half-mile oval. Runner-up Ron Eaton finishes half a lap back.

• Coach Brian Tiler's Portland Timbers are coming off a 2-1 North American Soccer League victory at Hawaii. Captain Pat McMahon scores the winning goal at Aloha Stadium.
