The recently concluded Tournament of the Americas at Memorial Coliseum has drawn a near-capacity total of 133,274 fans, reportedly earning USA Basketball more than $2 million.
The tournament featured a U.S. team stocked with NBA stars getting ready for the Barcelona Olympics.
The Trail Blazers and a promotions company, America's Best, headed by Brian Parrott, operated the event together and reportedly will split another $1.7 million as their share of the profit.
But the NBA is the big winner, with Clyde Drexler and his cohorts showing just how superior the league's talent is to that of other countries.
• The new Continental Indoor Soccer League announces that Portland will be one of 10 cities with a team when it begins play in 1993.
• The seventh State Games of Oregon is set to begin with a record of nearly 8,000 athletes competing over two days in 26 spots at 45 sites in the Portland area.
