Daulton Varsho scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth inning the Hillsboro Hops beat the Eugene Emeralds 6-5 at Ron Tonkin Field.
Varsho tripled on a full-count pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth, his second triple of the night. With Tra'mayne Holmes at the plate, he came home on a passed ball.
The win moved Hillsboro back into a tie with Eugene and Boise at 15-13 atop the South Division of the Northwest League with eight games remaining in the first half schedule.
Varsho finished 3 for 5. He hit a bases-clearing triple with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to cap a four-run Hillsboro inning that tied the score at 5-5. Three walks and two hits fueled that rally, which included an RBI single by Pavin Smith.
Yan Sanchez hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning for Hillsboro.
Eugene then built a 5-1 lead, scoring twice in the second, twice in the third and once in the top of the fifth.
All five Eugene runs were off of starting pitcher Mitchell Aker, who allowed eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Four Hops relievers then kept the Emeralds off the scoreboard. Erbert Gonzalez (1-1) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts for the pitching win.
Drew Ellis went 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Hops as six of Hillsboro's nine hits went for extra bases.
