WEDNESDAY MLS PLAYOFFS/Vancouver Whitecaps rout visiting San Jose 5-0 in knockout round match so Portland will face winner of Thursday match at Houston

The Portland Timbers will face the winner of Thursday's match between Sporting Kansas City and Houston in the MLS Cup Western Conference semifinals.

The Timbers, the top seed in the Western Conference, will open that total-goals series on the road either on Monday, Oct. 30 at Houston or on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at Sporting Kansas City.

The second game will be on November 5 at Providence Park.

Sporting Kansas City visits Houston at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (UniMas TV, MLS Live free webcast).

Vancouver and Seattle meet in the other Western Conference semifinal series after the No. 3-seed Whitecaps eliminated No. 6-seed San Jose on Wednesday.

The 5-0 win over visiting San Jose was the first playoff win in club history for the Whitecaps.

Vancouver took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute on a Fredy Montero header from a corner kick. A perfectly-placed free kick by Cristian Techera made it 2-0 in the 57th minute. Kendall Waston put in a rebound in the 64th minute.

Nicolas Mezquida added goals in the 78th and 80th minutes.

New York Red Bulls 4, Chicago 0 — Goals from Bradly Wright-Phillips and Sacha Kljestan in the first 11 minutes sent the Red Bulls on their way to the road victory. New York, the No. 6 seed, will face top overall seed Toronto in the Eastern semifinals.

The Red Bulls are the only team from the East that would have to travel to the Western Conference champion if they reach the MLS Cup finals.

On Thursday, Columbus visits Atlanta United in the other Eastern Conference semifinal (4 p.m., ESPN2). The winner there takes on New York City FC in the Eastern semifinals.
