Timbers face Houston in playoffs
The Portland Timbers will face the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup Western Conference semifinals.
The two-leg series will begin at Houston on Monday. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. (FS1 TV). The second leg is on November 5 at Providence Park (time to be determined).
Houston beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in extra time on Thursday in the knockout round match between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds into the Western Conference playoffs.
Alberth Elis scored from eight yards out in the 94th minute for the Dynamo. The match went 30 extra minutes after the teams played to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes.
Portland and Houston met twice during the regular season, with the Timbers winning at home and earning a draw at Houston and the teams combining to score 10 goals. The teams have not seen each other since a 2-2 draw at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston on July 29.
Portland scored a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Houston in the third match of the season on March 18 at Providence Park.
The two-leg playoff series will be won by the team that scores the most goals over the two games. Away goals will be the first tiebreaker.
The other Western Conference semifinal features Seattle against Vancouver, so if the Timbers get past Houston it will be an all-Cascadia Western Conference final series.
• Columbus 0 (3), Atlanta 0 (1) — The No. 5 seed Crew won on penalty kicks against No. 4 seed Atlanta in front of an MLS playoff record crowd of 67,221 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Columbus advances to take on New York City FC in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Despite being scoreless through 120 minutes, this was a wild match that saw both teams send shots off of posts and both goalkeepers make heroic saves. Atlanta, the dynamic expansion club, took 23 shots. Columbus took 18 shots.
Columbus goalkeeper Zack Steffen made eight saves over the two hours of soccer and two saves in the penalty kick tiebreaker.
