Portland State sweeps Toldeo
PORTLAND STATE 11, Toldeo 8 (8 innings)
PORTLAND STATE 6, Toledo 5
• They don't get much wilder than the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Gordon Faber Recreation Center in Hillsboro.
The teams combined for 28 hits. PSU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to stay alive. Toledo tallied four runs in the top of the eighth. Portland State scored seven in its half of the frame — with Kaela Morrow's three-run homer giving the Vikings the win.
Morrow was 3 for 4 with four RBIs (she also tripled).
Also for PSU, Rachel Menlove went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.
Emma Detamore, the fourth Viking pitcher, went the final three innings.
In the nightcap, PSU's leadoff batter, Tayler Gunesch, hit a solo HR in the first inning, singled in two runs in the second and walked with the bases loaded in the fifth.
Toledo scored one run in the seventh to reduce its deficit to two — and then filled the bases with two out. Another walk made the score 6-5. But the next batter grounded out to second base.
Each team finished with nine hits.
Detamore (7-4) went the distance for her second victory of the day.
Portland State's record went to 4-12, while Toledo went to 10-9.
