The Mariners fell to 5-8, managing only four hits at Peoria (Arizona) Stadium against the Giants, who are 5-7.

Rob Whalen started for Seattle and allowed two runs (both unearned) and four hits in there innings.

San Francisco starter Johnny Cueto got the win, allowing two hits but no runs and striking out five in three innings.

The teams will meet again at noon Friday, with James Paxton slated to start for Seattle.


Former Oregon Ducks standout Aaron Wise shot a 5-over-par 76 in the first round of the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. Wise is tied for 122nd.

Corey Conners grabbed the lead with a 67.

Tiger Woods had a 70 and is tied for eighth.


Ex-Jesuit High player Scott Harrington had a 2-under 70 and former UO golfer Wyndham Clark shot a 75 in the opening round of the El Bosque Mexico Championship in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Sebastian Munoz and Maverick McNealy have the lead at 64.

Harrington is tied for 27th, and Clark is tied for 111th.


The Oregon Golf Association has hired Shanda Imlay as Director of Junior Golf.

Imlay has been a PGA professional for more than 35 years and is co-owner of FUNdaMental Golf & Learning Center in Oregon City.


Portland's United Soccer League team has acquired 20-year-old Honduran forward Darixon Vuelto, 5-7 and 165 pounds. He will play on loan from C.D. Victoria of Liga Nacional, with the option to buy his contract.
