SUNDAY COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP/Oregon pulls out a win over Utah in bottom of ninth; Pilots bounce back against San Diego

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Stanford 9, OREGON STATE 6 (10 innings)

• No. 2 Stanford scored the final eight runs to erase a 6-1 fourth-inning deficit and avoid a series sweep.

Sophomore Will Matthiessen, from West Linn, delivered a three-run double with two out in the 10th inning that scored the winning runs. He also pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to bridge the gap to Cardinal closer Jack Little.

Little picked up his second win of the season after limiting third-ranked OSU to three hits over the final 3 1/3 innings.

Sophomore left-hander Jake Muholland (1-2) took the loss.

Junior outfielder Stephen Kwan and sophomore catcher Adley Rutschman had three hits apiece to pace the Beavers.

OSU (38-8-1, 16-7-1) dropped a game-and-a-half behind Stanford (39-8, 18-6) in their race for the Pac-12 lead.

The Beavers will open up a two-game set with San Diego (23-30) on at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Goss Stadium.

OREGON 4, Utah 3

• Senior second baseman Kyle Kasser scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and send the Ducks to a series sweep.

Kasser crossed the plate on a pitch low and inside that got past Utes catcher Shea Kramer.

Kasser was 2 for 4 and accounted for all four runs for Oregon (25-24, 11-13).

A throwing error in the top of the sixth by Kasser put the Utes (13-35, 6-18) up, 3-2. He responded by hitting a one-out triple to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh and scoring on the ensuing at-bat off a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Spencer Steer.

Sophomore right-hander Ryne Nelson (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

Oregon begins a three-game series at No. 11 UCLA (31-16, 15-9) at 4 p.m. Friday.

PORTLAND 4, San Diego 3

The Pilots used two seventh-inning runs to defeat the Toreros on Senior Day at Joe Etzel Field.

Sophomore outfielder Beau Brundage delivered a two-run double down the right-field line to erase a 3-2 lead for San Diego (23-30, 12-15). Brundage was 4 for 4 with three RBI's.

Sophomore right-hander Connor Knutson (3-2, 3.09) then threw two scoreless innings to collect his seventh save of the season.

The win marked the first time the Pilots (20-29, 10-14) have reached the 20-win mark since 2012.

Portland heads to Seattle on Tuesday for a matchup with Washington (25-21, 15-9). First pitch is at 6 p.m.
