Teen runaway identified as homicide victim
Victim's body was found in Washington Park
The female homicide victim whose body was found in Washington Park on June 26 has finally been identified as a 15-year-old runaway.
Mayra Sophia Cruz Rodriguez was visiting relatives in Vancouver, Wash., when she was reported as a runaway on June 15. She was from San Diego County, Calif., where she had previously been reported as runaway.
After the body was discovered, Portland homicide detectives distributed a sketch of her head and shoulders to the public as well as law enforcement nationwide. Detective Kevin Schmidt of the Clark County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit alerted the detectives after recalling bulletins disseminated to law enforcement agencies.
Ultimately, Cruz was identified by dental records, which were confirmed by a Forensic Odontologist associated with the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office.
Mark Beebout has been charged with murder in the case. He has also been indicted on multiple charges of aggravated murder in the homicide of Nikayla Powell, whose body was discovered in her Southeast Portland apartment.
Portland homicide detectives are seeking any additional information the public may have regarding Mayra Cruz Rodriguez and/or Mark Beebout.
The Portland Police Bureau wishes to express its gratitude to the multitude of agencies assisting in identifying Mayra Cruz, including the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office, the Oregon State Forensic Laboratory, the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and several agencies who assisted in distributing information nationwide to thousands of law enforcement entities.
