Boy safe, woman appears to have died of natural causes
A two-year-old boy was found alone but safe in the home of a deceased woman in Southeast Portland on Wednesday morning.
The name of the woman was not immediately released. Based on the preliminary investigation, police say the woman's death appears to be natural.
According to police, at 8:31 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, East Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 10100 block of Southeast Long Street on the report of a deceased female inside the home. The officers also learned that a two-year-old boy was alone in the residence.
Officers arrived and contacted the caller, who told police that she hadn't heard from her friend for a few days, so she came to check on her. The deceased woman was reported to have ongoing medical issues.
Officers located the woman who was clearly deceased and called for detectives, criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division and the Medical Examiner.
The boy was transported to a Portland hospital as a precaution. He appeared in good health. although he was clearly hungry and thirsty.
Detectives and the Medical Examiner will work with the Oregon Department of Human Services to locate family for the child.
