Man calls 9-1-1, attacks responding police

Drug overdose suspected in Wednesday morning incident

A man who called 9-1-1 to report he was poisoned then attacked the police who responded to help him.

No one was hurt in the Wednesday morning incident. The man was hospitalized for a suspected drug overdose.

According to police, at 8:21 a.m., a 43-year-old man called 9-1-1 from Heavenly Donuts, located at 504 Northeast 102nd Ave., to report that he'd been poisoned then he hung up.

Portland police officers were dispatched to cover medical personnel. While the officers were enroute, the man flagged down a Multnomah County Sheriff's Office patrol car and the deputy stopped to talk to him.

Medical personnel and Portland police arrived and began escorting the man to the ambulance so he could go to the hospital. Without warning, the man attacked the officers and began violently fighting. It took several officers to get him to the ground and hold him there until he could be loaded onto a gurney.

The preliminary assessment indicates that the man may have been high on methamphetamine.
