Bank robbery suspect taken into custody after tense downtown search
A 32-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the robbery of a downtown bank.
Portland police said Steven Wayne Gentry was booked into the Multnomah County Jail in connection with this robbery of a Wells Fargo bank branch at 1900 S.W. Fifth Ave. He was being held on federal bank robbery charges.
Two other people were taken into custody with Gentry but were released.
Gentrys arrest came after police searched for more than an hour for the person who robbed the Wells Fargo bank branch at about 4 p.m. Police officers and the citys Special Emergency Reaction Team blocked several downtown streets as they searched for the robbery suspect.
SERT officers surrounded an apartment building at 1115 S.W. 11th Ave., where police later found Gentry.
Officers were looking for the suspect who used a handgun and demanded money from tellers at the bank branch. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
No handgun was found when Gentry was taken into custody.
