Grotto statues damaged


Police ask public to help identify vandals

by: PORTLAND POLICE BUREAU - Statue of Joseph toppled and vandalized at the Grotto.Police are seeking the public's help to identify who damaged historic statues at the The Grotto, the religious sanctuary located at located at 8719 Northeast Beech Street.

According to the police, the statues were damaged on the evening on Nov. 28 and 29.

One statue is of Joseph holding the Baby Jesus. Both heads have been removed from the figures.

Another statue is located in the burial grounds and is also of Joseph. It has been knocked from it's base and the head removed. Two small angels have also sustained damage.

The statues are more than 100 years old and are made from Cararra Italian marble.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information, reported to Crime Stoppers, that leads to an arrest in this case, or any unsolved felony. Those providing information can remain anonymous.
