MAX disrupted in part of downtown

Update: Service restored by late morning

by: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Brian Edmund AndersonLight rail service was disrupted in part of downtown Portland overnight after a Hummer crashed into support poles for the overhead wire system on the west side of the Steel Bridge.

The crash knocked out one support pole for the overhead MAX lines and damaged a signal head and two other poles.

As a result of the accident, Green and Yellow line MAX trains were not running on 5th and 6th avenues through the morning. TriMet officials originally thought service might not be restored for two days, it resumed shortly after 11 a.m.

According to the police, the accident happened around 2:55 a.m. Officers responding to the report of a single vehicle crash found a crashed Hummer H2 at the west end of the Steel Bridge. They contacted the driver, Brian Edmund Anderson, 38, of North Portland.

Anderson was uninjured but an investigation by officers found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Anderson's blood alcohol content (BAC) was more than twice the legal limit.

Anderson was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of DUII and Reckless Driving. He could face additional charges in connection with the damage to the MAX line.

TriMet users should check http://www.trimet.org/alerts for service updates.
