Police respond to explosion at North Portland school

No one injured and no property damaged in Sunday morning incident


Police are investigating an apparent explosion at a North Portland elementary school.

No one was injured in the Sunday morning incident at near the playground at Sitton Elementary School, 9930 N. Smith St.

According to police, at 9:43 a.m. on Dec. 10, North Precinct officers responded to the report of a suspicious device near the playground at the school. When the officers arrived, they located a small, improvised device that had already detonated and created a small divot in the grass.

There was no property damage to the school.

Investigators from the Metropolitan Explosives Disposal Unit were called to the scene to collect evidence.

According to police, it is not known when the device was detonated. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau's Non-Emergency line at (503) 823-3333.
