Police catch 'Hipster Bandit'

by: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Harvie Dale Oglesby IIIPolice have arrested the so-called "Hipster Bandit" suspected of a series of bank robberies in Portland.

Harvie Dale Oglesby III, 40, was arrested Friday and lodged in the Multnomah County Jail pending federal bank robbery charges.

Oglesby earned the nickname the "Hipster Bandit" after a witness in an August robbery told police that he "looked like a hipster."

Oglesby was caught after he robbed the Consolidated Community Credit Union in Northeast Portland's Kerns neighborhood at 2021 N.E. Sandy Blvd. As officers were heading to the credit union, they received additional information that the suspect used a demand note and obtained an undisclosed amount of money. Witnesses provided a detailed description of him to police.

Officers converged on the neighborhood near the bank and located a man matching the suspect's description riding a bicycle away. Officers were able to catch up with the man and take him into custody at Northeast 31st Avenue and Irving Street. Evidence from the bank robbery was recovered from the suspect.

Detectives identified the suspect as Oglesby, and believe he is responsible for four additional bank robberies in Portland:

• July 19, at the U.S. Bank, 7300 S.W. Terwilliger Blvd.

• Aug. 31, at the Albina Community Bank, 5636 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

• Oct. 19, at the Key Bank, 3839 N.E. Broadway.

• Nov. 26, at the Key Bank, 3515 S.W. Troy Street.
