Police talk suicidal man out of jumping onto I-5

Police talked a suicidal man out of jumping from the North Weidler Street overpass above Interstate 5 on Christmas Eve.

The man, whose name is not being released, was transported to an area hospital at the end of the three-hour ordeal.

According to police, at 10:50 p.m. on Dec. 24, North Precinct officers responded to the overpass on the report of a man standing outside the railing as if he was going to jump onto the freeway.

Officers arrived and began talking with the man, who was threatening to jump to the freeway below. Additional officers arrived in the area and began closing down I-5 in both directions below the man. Northbound traffic was diverted onto I-405 at the Marquam Bridge and southbound traffic was diverted onto I-405 at the Fremont Bridge. Westbound Interstate 84 traffic was diverted onto I-5 southbound.

Members of the Crisis Negotiation Team responded and talked with the man, who initially refused to come back over the railing to safety. He eventually changed his mind, however. At approximately 1:30 a.m., he got into a bucket raised by a Portland Fire & Rescue truck, was lowered to the ground and was transported to a hospital.
