Oregon rings in new year with minimum wage increase

Oregonians who earn minimum wage will ring in the new year with a pay increase when the hourly wage goes up 15 cents to $8.95 on Jan. 1.

That could mean an extra $312 a year for a family with one full-time minimum wage earner.

The minimum wage increase is due to 2002’s Measure 25, which linked Oregon’s minimum wage increases to the cost of living.

Oregon’s Employment Department estimated that about 130,000 jobs paying minimum wage during the first quarter of 2012 would be affected by the increase.

Oregon has the second highest minimum wage in the nation behind Washington’s minimum wage, which goes up to $9.19 Jan. 1.
