Off-duty Hillsboro officer accused of injuring sheriff's deputy during arrest

by: WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Hillsboro Police Officer Timothy CannonAn off-duty Hillsboro police officer has been accused of injuring a Washington County sheriff's deputy in the hand during a domestic disturbance in Forest Grove Sunday evening.

The deputy was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

KOIN Local 6 was the first to identify the Hillsboro officer as Timothy Cannon. He was arrested and treated for injuries he suffered during a confrontation with deputies. Cannon was lodged in the Washington County Jail on attempted aggravated murder charges. Bail is set at $250,000.

Cannon, 46, is a 13-year veteran of the Hillsboro Police Department assigned to the patrol division. Cannon was honored with a department life-saving award in November.

Ten law enforcement officers have been placed on paid administrative leave after firing their weapons during the incident. Five are from The Forest Grove Police Department, four from The Washington County Sheriff's Office and one from is from the Hillsboro Police Department.

The administrative leave is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting. Names of the officers were not immediately available.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, at about 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, Forest Grove Police officers and Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the 1000 block of 37th Avenue in Forest Grove. The disturbance was between an off-duty Hillsboro Police officer and his wife, who works for the Forest Grove Police Department.

Once Forest Grove officers and deputies were on scene, they tried to contact the man inside the house. When that failed, the county’s response team arrived and entered the home. Shots were fired inside the home and one of the deputies was injured. No details were provided about how the deputy was injured, or the extent of the injuries.

Both the suspect and the deputy were treated and released from a local hospital.

The wife of the suspect and her 6-year-old daughter were not harmed during the incident.

Some of the surrounding neighbors were evacuated as the emergency response team moved in.

Detectives from the Washington County Major Crimes Team are investigating the incident.
