Jail inmate dies

A 55-year-old male Multnomah County jail inmate died in custody Saturday afternoon.

He is identified as David William Chilton, who was in custody on a U.S. Marshal hold for Bank Robbery.

The cause of death was not immediately determined.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Multnomah County Detention Center, a corrections deputy attempted to wake the inmate in his cell for dinner service and found the inmate unresponsive.

On-duty medical personnel immediately responded and attempted to revive the inmate with first aid and CPR. Portland Fire Bureau and AMR Ambulance personnel also arrived and assisted on-duty medical personnel, but all efforts were unsuccessful.

Sheriff's detectives were notified and responded to conduct the death investigation. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner was notified and also responded.

The initial investigation revealed no obvious signs of foul play or self-harm, the sherrif's office says.

The MCDC jail housing units were locked down during the emergency and while the initial investigation was conducted. MCDC returned to normal operations just before 10:00 p.m.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification. The remains have been released to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner's Office.
