Man beats fellow drinkers with pipe


by: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Michael David OswaldA drinking party by the side of the freeway turned violent in Portland early Saturday, with one drinker beating the other three with a pipe.

Police arrested Michael David Oswald, 55, on three counts of Assault in the Second Degree and booked him into the Multnomah County Jail. None of the his victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

According to police, at 10:19 a.m. on Feb. 2, North Precinct officers responded to the report of four men fighting at Northeast 2nd Avenue and Clackamas Street. When police the officers arrived, they found three men who had been beaten with a pipe by another man.

The officers learned that all four men were sitting by the freeway drinking together when an argument broke out and the suspect began hitting the other three men with a pipe.

The officers located the suspect trying to climb a fence behind the State Hospital at 1121 NE 2nd Ave., where he was taken into custody.
