Rose City named World Environment Day host
Portland was selected to host World Environment Day 2013 by the United Nations Environment Programmes North America office.
As a host city, Portland would stage a variety of events starting with Earth Day on April 22 and leading up to World Environment Day on June 5. One of the events is the International Childrens Painting Competition, to be exhibited in Portland. Winners of the competition will receive a free trip to Portland.
The U.N. uses the event to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment.
Portland City Council is scheduled to accept the invitation to host the event at Wednesdays council session.
Mayor Charlie Hales has suggested that the Bureau of Environmental Services watershed program provide part-time staff to work on the public events, costing the city $23,000 in staff time.
