Dalai Lama plans talks at U of P, environmental summit

The Tibetan spiritual leader plans several local events as part of a three-day environmental summit in the Rose City.The Dalai Lama will join a discussion of environmental issues, religion and politics during his early May Portland appearances.

Maitripa College, the only Tibetan Buddhist college in the Pacific Northwest, hosts the Tibetan spiritual leader visit to Oregon from May 9 to 11.

The visit is part of the three-day Dalai Lama Environmental Summit. It include public appearances in Portland on May 9 and 11, and a trip to Eugene on May 10.

The summit includes two events co-sponsored by the University of Portland on May 9, and two events at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on May 11, including a morning panel sponsored by Maitripa College and an afternoon public address co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhist people. According to Tibetan tradition, he is the reincarnation of his predecessor, the 13th Dalai Lama.

The University of Portland events will take place at the Chiles Center, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. At 9:30 a.m., the Dalai Lama will be joined by a religious leader from the Archdiocese of Portland, Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana of Congregation Beth Israel of Portland, Imam Muhammed Najieb of the Muslim Community Center of Portland and Grandmother Agnes Baker Pilgrim from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, for an interfaith dialog “Spirituality and the Environment.”

At 1:30 p.m., the Dalai Lama will talk on “Universal Responsibility and the Inner Environment: the Nature of Mind.” It will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

On Saturday, May 11, the Dalai Lama will join a panel of political and environmental leaders at Veterans Memorial Coliseum to discuss the roles of science and policy in catalyzing environmental action globally and in the Northwest in “Environmental Summit: Universal Responsibility and the Global Environment.”

He will conclude the weekend with a public speech at the coliseum at 1:30 p.m., May 11, on the “Inspiration for the Global Environment.”

The Dalai Lama also will speak May 10 at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

The Dalai Lama most recently visited Portland in 2001.
