Molalla School District investigating First Student procedures

Molalla school Superintendent Tony Mann has asked the state Department of Education to provide a school transportation consultant to assist in reveiwing First Student safety, maintenance and hiring procedures.

For the third time in two years, a First Student school bus carrying Molalla students was involved in a traffic accident about two weeks ago when a bus landed in a ditch on Vick Road. Children were aboard the bus at the time of the accident, but nobody was injured. No other vehicles were involved and no citation was issued.

As a result of the incident, however, Mann demanded a complete review of First Student’s safety, maintenance, hiring and training procedures from the company.

The school board last week spent quite a bit of time discussing the bus incident.

“The board was very interested in making sure I cover their concerns on transportation,” Mann said Friday. “We discussed our shared concerns, and our commitment to investigating incidents and working with First Student.”

An investigation is already underway, he said.

“And we have sought out a transportation consultant from the Department of Education so when we sit down with First Student, we will be very thorough and will do our due diligence.”
