The University of Portland will use a $100,000 donation to its RISE campaign from the late Mollie and Harold Bihn to establish a scholarship for Oregon undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

Northeast Portland residents Mollie and Harold Bihn left the university the money because of treatment they had received from local nurses. The Bihns had no connection to the university, but wanted to help local students, according to neighbor and family friend Carol Larson.

As they became older and frail, Larson said, “Harold could not praise nurses enough, how hard they worked and how important they are.”

The Bihns’ donation goes to the university’s RISE campaign, which hopes to raise $175 million in the next years. It’s the largest capital campaign goal at a private university in the Pacific Northwest.
