Musician Salaam visits Right 2 Dream Too camp
New Jersey musician and organizer Hasan Salaam will visit Old Towns Right 2 Dream Too homeless camp Wednesday afternoon to offer support to the people who are staying there.
Salaam, who is on a lecture tour of the Pacific Northwest, plans to visit the homeless camp supporters call it a rest area near Northwest Fourth Avenue and Burnside Street at about 4 p.m. He will also talk with Right 2 Dream Too members and organizers from Right 2 Survive.
Salaams music paints vivid pictures of things that bind society, which he sometimes calls the soundtrack for social change.
We are honored to have Hasan Salaam take time out from his tour to visit with us, says Sophia Kinhnarath, a member of Right 2 Survive, who met Salaam last week at a social justice conference in Eugene. We all can learn a lot from Hasan's message and his organizing experience.
Salaam is also appearing at the Portland Community Colleges Cascade Campus Wednesday to discuss the history of black music and black resistance. He also will appear Wednesday evening at Lewis and Clark College to discuss From Spirituals to Hip Hop.
