Musician Salaam visits Right 2 Dream Too camp

Salaam, who is on a lecture tour of the Pacific Northwest, plans to visit the homeless camp — supporters call it a “rest area” — near Northwest Fourth Avenue and Burnside Street at about 4 p.m. He will also talk with Right 2 Dream Too members and organizers from Right 2 Survive.

Salaam’s music paints vivid pictures of things that bind society, which he sometimes calls the “soundtrack for social change.”

“We are honored to have Hasan Salaam take time out from his tour to visit with us,” says Sophia Kinhnarath, a member of Right 2 Survive, who met Salaam last week at a social justice conference in Eugene. “We all can learn a lot from Hasan's message and his organizing experience.”

Salaam is also appearing at the Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus Wednesday to discuss the history of black music and black resistance. He also will appear Wednesday evening at Lewis and Clark College to discuss “From Spirituals to Hip Hop.”
