A 5-year-old girl struck by a car Thursday evening in Southeast Portland died on her way to the hospital.

Police said Morgan Cook was struck at about 7:08 p.m. at Southeast 136th Avenue and Ellis Street.

Portland police said the girl was visiting friends across the street from her home when she was struck while crossing 136th Avenue by a 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara driven by 68-year-old Huong Bacon.

The driver of the Suzuki remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation.

Traffic was blocked near Southeast 136th Avenue and Ellis Street during an investigation by the Traffic Division Major Crash Team.

Editor's Note: Portland police originally said the girl was 4 years old and the driver was 69 years old. They corrected the error Friday afternoon.
