Fatal accident victims identified
Police have identified the victims in a fatal two-car accident on Saturday in Southeast Portland.
The driver of one car, 55-year-old Paul Lawrence Knepper, and his mother, 90-year-old Hazel Agnes Knepper, both died at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the other car, 29-year-old Daniel Troy Johnson, was located by police at Southeast 29th Avenue and Powell Boulevard, where he was taken into custody.
The accident took place Saturday afternoon at Southeast 28th Place and Gladstone Street. Investigators learned that a gold 2000 Cadillac Escalade SUV, driven by Johnson, was traveling northbound on 28th Place and drove through a stop sign at Gladstone, striking the eastbound white 2000 Toyota Corolla four-door, driven by Knepper.
Johnson and two passengers ran on foot from the crash scene. A fourth occupant, 28-year-old Benjamin Chase Arce, and a dog remained in the SUV. Arce was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries. The dog was taken by Multnomah County Animal Control.
The twho other passengers had not been located early Sunday morning.
Johnson will be charged with two counts of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Felony Hit and Run, Assault in the Fourth Degree, and DUII. He will be booked into the Multnomah County Jail and will be arraigned on Monday, March 11.
Police say it appears that both speed and alcohol contributed to this fatal crash. These are the 10th and 11th traffic fatalities of 2013.
