Youth Careers Expo connects with local students

More than 5,000 students from across the region will connect with industry leaders at the 2013 NW Youth Careers Expo, set for March 19.

The event, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will include mock interviews with students, who are encouraged to bring their résumés.

The exhibitors will include a diverse array of employers in various fields: health care, sports apparel, technology, arts and communications, animal care, construction, energy, manufacturing, public sector, nonprofits, post-secondary and banking.

The industry spotlight will be on health care, with showcases from Legacy Health nurses and Oregon Health & Science University specialists.

The nonprofit Portland Workforce Alliance is sponsoring the event and will host a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. that morning, prior to the expo.

Gov. John Kitzhaber and Oregon Education Officer Rudy Crew will speak at the breakfast.

The annual career expo is the capstone of Portland Workforce Alliance's work. Last year it attracted 4,800 students from around 70 high schools in the region, and 120 exhibitors.
