Chun takes on new Chief Joseph/Ockley Green school

by: COURTESY OF PPS - Principal Molly ChunA longtime Portland Public Schools teacher and principal has been named to lead Chief Joseph/Ockley Green K-8 School starting this fall.

Molly Chun, principal at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt, starts the job July 1, overseeing the new K-8 school that will operate on two campuses.

"Chun is deeply committed to equity and recognized for her effectiveness in raising achievement, increasing family involvement and investing in every student’s success," Superintendent Carole Smith said in a statement after naming Chun to the post April 9 at a joint school meeting.

Chun became a teacher 33 years ago, spending 29 of those years in Jefferson neighborhood schools.

Nine years ago she became assistant principal at Ockley Green, then served at Faubion before leading Boise-Eliot and then Boise-Eliot/Humboldt.

Her own children attended Chief Joseph.

Teachers and families at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt credit Chun's leadership for overseeing the merger of Humboldt School and Boise-Eliot this school year.

Humboldt, the district's smallest PK-8 school, closed in June due to budget constraints.

Teachers at Chief Joseph and Ockley Green indicated they were looking for a strong leader to oversee their newly joined school. She'll work on the schools' transition with Chief Joseph Principal Joe Galati and Ockley Green Principal Conrad Hurdle, as well as with parents, teachers and community partners.

Parents and teachers from both schools have come together to create a joint-school transition team.

The school board voted Feb. 25 to consolidate Chief Joseph and Ockley Green as one school on two campuses to relieve overcrowding at Chief Joseph and underenrollment at Ockley Green.

The change was part of the Jefferson Enrollment Balancing process this year. Kindergarten through third graders will attend the Chief Joseph campus and the fourth through eighth graders will attend the Ockley Green campus.

District leaders are looking for someone to take Chun's place at Boise-Eliot/Humboldt. They'll work with the school community on that process.
