The Oregonian announced Thursday morning that it will reduce home deliveries from seven to four days a week.

Company officials said they will continue to publish print editions every day, but on the other non-delivery days, the newspaper will be available for sale only in news boxes.

The changes are effective Oct. 1. However, officials also said an undisclosed number of newsroom employees will immediately lose their jobs as part of the transition.

In response, Mark Garber, president and publisher of the Portland Tribune and Community Newpapers, said it was unfortunate the daily newspaper was having to reduce distribution days and cut staff, but he understands the challenges daily newspapers are facing.

"Unlike metro daily newspapers, our family of 24 community newspapers is doing well. We have no plans to cut back and in fact are growing our company with new print products each month."

"We believe in the future of newspapers and are looking for ways our publications can better serve our readers and advertisers," said Garber, noting that the company bought six additional newspapers in January.

"That demonstrates our commitment to growth," Garber said.

The Portland Tribune and Community Newspapers are locally owned by Dr. Robert Pamplin.

According to a series of stories posted on The Oregonian's website, the changes are similar to those that the newspaper's out-of-state owners have made to their publications in Michigan, Alabama, Syracuse, Harrisburg, Cleveland and New Orleans.

The Oregonian's home delivery days will be Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. A company statement also said the newspaper will deliver a Saturday edition "as a bonus."

Company officials did not announce how many copies of the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday papers will be printed.

The announcement said a new company called Oregonian Media Group will launch in the fall to publish The Oregonian and operate its website. A separate company, Advance Central Services Oregon, will provide support services. N. Christian Anderson III, currently president and publisher of The Oregonian, will become president of Oregonian Media Group. Kevin Denny, currently vice president of operations and circulation of The Oregonian, will become vice president and general manager of ACS Oregon.
