Mounted patrol supporters halfway to fundraising goal

by: TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO: L.E. BASKOW - Supporters of the Portland Police Bureau's Mounted Patrol have raised half of their goal to save the unit from budget cuts.A campaign to keep Portland’s police horses is halfway to its goal.

Friends of the Portland Police Bureau’s Mounted Patrol has raised more than $200,000 of the $400,000 needed for non-personnel expenses such as saddles, gear and facility operations.

“We are incredibly grateful for all the community support,” said Bob Ball, vice president of the group.

An auction of donated items given to the cause by community members continues until Sunday, July 7. New board games, binoculars, art and handbags are open for bid through eBay’s Giving Works.

Other efforts included the Pony Up Open Barn Fundraiser, which raised more than $14,000 with photo opportunities with the horses, tours of the facility and riding demonstrations.

To overcome budget cuts, the 122-year-old mounted patrol program started fundraising in May.

The Friends Facebook page, Save Portland’s Mounted Patrol, www.facebook.com/SavePortlandsMountedPatrol has more than 16,500 likes and profiles the horses in the fleet.
