A team of volunteers from the Oregon Humane Society gathered Tuesday morning at Punchbowl Falls in the Columbia River Gorge to rescue a dog that fell Monday evening over the edge of a trail above the falls.
Humane Society officials said the dog, a 1-year-old black labradoodle named Max, had apparently run off the trail and over the edge of the falls. Maxs owner said the dog wasnt in the water about 80 feet below and fears the dog could be trapped on a ledge.
The owners name was not released.
The Punchbowl waterfall is on the popular Eagle Creek Trail near the Historic Columbia River Highway.
The Humane Societys four-person rescue team met the dog's owner at the Eagle Creek Trail Head at about 7 a.m. Tuesday and plans the two-mile hike to the spot where the dog disappeared. Members of the Humane Societys Technical Animal Rescue Team are trained in mountain and water rescues and have conducted several rescues in the gorge.
