Civil rights groups to mark 50th anniversary of March on Washington

Portland civil rights leaders will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 24.

The 1963 march, which attracted an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people, is known as the event where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

The Portland march will begin at 10 a.m. at Terry Schrunk Plaza downtown. It’s sponsored by the Albina Ministerial Coalition for Justice and Police Reform, the Urban League and numerous other civil rights, labor, minority rights and labor groups.

Two prominent black ministers, LeRoy Haynes of Allen Temple CME Church and T. A. Bethel of Maranatha Church, will announce the program and schedule of the Portland event on Thursday, Aug. 22.
