Three wounded in downtown gang shooting

Three people were wounded in a gang-related shooting in downtown Portland Saturday evening.

Police say the shooting involved a group of people waiting to board the Portland Sprit tour boat for a private party.

The victims are identified as 26-year-old Leonard Brightmon, 22-year-old Xavier Bolden, and, 22-year-old Ronnie Smith. All were transported to Portland hospitals for treatment.

Brightmon and Bolden's injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Smith is in critical condition but expected to survive his injuries.

According to police, three suspects ran from the scene after the shooting. They are described as African American males, late teens to early 20s, medium height, medium weight, wearing all white clothes.

Investigators have learned that the Portland Spirit had been rented out for a private party that attracted a large number of gang members and associates. The suspects approached a line of waiting people and there was a confrontation between the victims and suspects before shots were fired.

The shooting occurred in Waterfront Park, near the gangway to the Portland Spirit. At the time of the shooting, there were approximately 300 people on-board the Portland Spirit waiting for the party to begin.

After the shooting, Portland Fire & Rescue boats searched the river near the Portland Spirit to make sure no additional victims or witnesses went into the water. None were located.

Police initially responded to Southwest Naito Parkway and Salmon Street on the report of two people injured by gunfire at 10:57 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. Central Precinct officers arrived and located a third victim suffering a gunshot wound and a large crowd of people.

The area of Salmon Springs at the Portland Spirit was closed as a crime scene.

Based on the initial investigation it appears this shooting is gang-related.
