First fire of 2012 happens fast

Southwest Portland house damaged just after midnight

That didn't take long.

Portland firefighters responded to the first fire of the year just six minutes after midnight on New Year's Day.

When they arrived at the house at 1304 S.W. Spring Garden St., firefighters from Station 10 in Burlingame found flames coming from the back of the structure. The fire was controlled within 20 minutes. It did extensive damage to the house.

A neighbor reported the fire after waking to the sound of popping. She looked out her window and saw the blaze.

Investigators have not released the cause of the fire or an estimate of its damage.
