First snow of year covers Portland

On-again, off-again showers add up on Sunday

Snow totals accumulated throughout Portland on Sunday during the first winter story of 2012.

Snow lightly dusted the lower west hills by around 8 a.m., although downtown Portland was still more wet than white. By the afternoon, the shifting storm deposited more snow in different parts of town, although sun breaks caused melting, too.

Icier conditions were reported in other areas of the region, however, including the Columbia Gorge, where slick roads contributed to a number of traffic accident.

State and city transportation officials said they have crews standing by in case the snow and ice becomes so hazardous that streets need to be plowed or de-iced. Conditions were not predicted to be significantly worse by the Monday morning rush hour.
