Smart Park employees assaulted during car prowl
Two Smart Park employees were beaten and threatened early Monday morning when they caught two men trying to break into cars in a downtown parking garage.
Portland police said the two employees were hit with a metal pipe and threatened with a handgun. No shots were fired during the incident.
One of the two men was treated at a hospital for his injuries. The other was treated at the parking garage for minor injuries.
The employees said that at about 5:42 a.m. they were cleaning drains in the Smart Park garage at Southwest Third Avenue and Alder Street when they discovered two men on the eighth floor trying to break into a car. The vehicle belonged to one of the garage employees.
When they employees confronted the men, they were attacked.
The two other men fled with a backpack taken from the employee's car.
The two car prowlers were described as white men in their 20s, between 5-8 and 5-10 and wearing black hoodie sweatshirts. One had a shaved head.
